*Everton were playing in the ‘Football League’ and they owned Jimmy’s ‘Football League’ registration, a player could go and play in the ‘Southern League’ without having to have their registration officially transferred because the two leagues had separate registration scheme so Jimmy signed for Gravesend Utd for the 1899/00 season even though Everton still owned his ‘Football League’ registration. At the end of the 1899/00 season Gravesend Utd folded and as he had had a good season in the ‘Southern League Division 1’ (the same division as spurzzz, West Ham Utd, Milwall & QPR) Woolwich Arsenal (who had played in Football League Division 2 that season) asked Everton if they could buy his ‘Football League’ registration and they agreed on a fee of £25. Thanks to Andy Kelly for explaining that to me.
